4Lots of Fun!Dec 29, 2008

PROS:
This was a Christmas gift for my 5-year-old son. After reading the few reviews that were available on the web, I was a bit apprehensive so I assembled this set the night before Christmas Eve just to see how it would perform. The basic track setup was quite intuitive. Following the directions and common sense, I was able to get the basic setup running within an hour. It's a good thing my wife and child were at the in-laws. I had a blast. I carefully repackaged it for Christmas Day. We didn't have a chance to play with it that day, but Christmas night, I couldn't wait to get it set up for my son. After going to bed, he was awakened by the sound of my wife and I playing with his toy. He took over and got the feel of this set within 5 minutes. We were thrilled. The cars stay on the track as well as can be expected when following the laws of physics - i.e. slow down around the turns, and punch it on the straightaway.

Cons:
- Racer X fell out of his car the first night. But no worries. A spot of Crazy Glue fixed him right up.
- Speed Racer's lights are very dim - though this could just be this particular car. I plan on asking the retailer about this. Again, no worries - the performance is still stellar.
- The "walls" that go around the curves are made of paper and constantly need to be reattached when run into by one of the cars. Perhaps this is by design. For sure, they keep the cars from flying across the room when the driver refuses to recognize the laws of physics, but it would be nice if the walls were a little more robust - i.e. made of plastic rather than laminated paper.

Observations:
- I've read other reviews that say that the cars will not stay on the track. Nonsense - slow down going into the curves!
- As a followup to that, lay off the turbo button. It's not needed, and I have yet to figure out what it's for. However, my 5-year-old is able to use it when going into the loop and stay on the track in the following curve. Kids - go figure...
- Follow the setup directions completely and you can't go wrong. Carrera has done a great job of providing reinforcement for each joint in the track so that it won't fall apart after many laps. I have to adjust the track in the loop every once in awhile, but that's only because I chose the wrong reinforcement tab on that particular section of the track.
- I'm brand new to slot car racing, but even I've figured out that if the cars don't perform, CHECK THE BRUSHES. They must be in proper alignment for the cars to work efficiently and require periodic adjustment.

Overall, I would HIGHLY recommend this set. I gave full detail the way that I saw it only to give full disclosure. If not for the paper walls and the dim lights on Speed Racer's car, I would have given this product 5 stars. I don't know who enjoys this set more - my son, my wife, or me. I'm already looking at making this a long-term hobby.

2Not for kids!! Way too hard to controlJun 23, 2008

In my opinion, this product should be for at least 10+ or maybe 12+. It is very, very difficult to keep the cars on the track, you spend 90% of the time chasing down the cars and putting them back on the track. Also, one of our cars doesn't work, so we are going to have to deal with getting a new one. Not sure we will bother to get another car, as my guess is this game winds up in our trash can by the end of the week. I would strongly suggest another, better quality and more user friendly product.

4Carrera Go! Speed Racer setMay 24, 2008

This is a very cool set... My 7 year old son loves it. I recommend adding 2 straight extensions to help the operator slow down coming out of the loop in order to make the curve/turn.

4Requires some patience, but worth itJan 08, 2009

One of my fondest childhood Christmas memories is of waking up as an eight year old to find a fabulous slot car set which seemed to take up half the living room. I couldn't get enough of it. So I figured my six year old son is at least as bright as I was and deserved his a bit sooner. Well...that and the fact that I couldn't wait to relive my childhood.

This Carrera set is a pretty nice starter. It takes a while to put together, but not beyond what I expected. You'll be happy those little plastic tabs are required at each connection point; even though they take a while to attach, they do help keep it together. The guardrails are only mildly helpful, consistently getting detached from the track when you take a turn too quickly. They do snap right back on, however, and I suppose you could put a spot of glue underneath the track where they connect.

As for the patience required (some have given it low marks for that, I believe), that's just to be expected. My son seems to have a fair amount of patience with it, and is getting pretty good. I would suggest having your child practice alone at first, as the idea of competition may cause them to throw caution to the wind. It does with my son, at any rate. He spins out of control much less when running the cars at his own pace.

A minor irritation would be the brush-like contacts on the underside. They do need to be spread apart with some regularity in order to keep them in contact with the metal rails on the track. No big deal, though. Overall, lots of fun, and the lap counters will let you know who's in the lead, though you may need a third party to help monitor that!

I just spent 3 hours on Christmas eve dicephering the instructions (I am admittedly not handy), assembling this, testing with unsatisfactory results, and then modifying it by taking out the loop and the bank to try to make it usable for my son. Getting the timing right for the loop in particular is nearly impossible and virtually every lap ended in the car jumping the track. It requires too much eye hand coordination and even after mastering the timing, I do not see how this could ever be enjoyable for a child. One of the cars would lose its driver with every track jump, and probably most annoying, the track would not accommodate two cars racing on two tracks at the same time. Flipping the power would allow one or the other track to work, but not both. I agree with one of the other reviewers, this will likely end up in the trash within a month, but I would say it is already a piece of trash.
