A must for the Little Mermaid obsessed - but a few design flaws.Jul 12, 2007

My 4 year old daughter is deeply into a Little Mermaid phase. There are many toys of Ariel, but there are few play-friendly options for some of the other characters, particularly King Triton, Ursula, Eric, and the electric eels. This set omits the electric eels, but has all the characters mentioned, plus Flounder and Sebastian. The sculpturing is great - the characters really look like the characters. The paint is first rate also. Most of the pieces are a good size - small enough that the whole collection can easily be brought along. A couple are too small. On the whole this collection has great play value and are in heavy rotation in my house right now. Ursula is the highlight of this set. She is particularly well made and is a delight.
There are some downsides, however. King Triton is depicted kneeling, but he's too top heavy to stand on his knees. He falls over on his side. Ariel is depicted with a "sea bottom" base at the bend in her tail. This makes her awkward to hold or play that she's swimming. My daughter tends to leave this Ariel behind and use a different one from another play set. Sebastian is made to scale (and thus too small). They give him a big base to compensate (which isn't fun) but he's still too small and gets lost. His small size makes him the least successful rendition. Flounder is well crafted, but is also so small he gets lost easily. They decided to include Eric's dog - who is a very minor character - but omit the evil electric eels - who play a much larger role in the movie. At least Eric looks great.
These are a bit more than minor quibbles. This comes close to being an ideal play set of small portable characters - but misses the mark on a few points. There isn't much competition out at the moment, though.
Update - after a few months both Flounder and Sebastian are lost (as expected). Triton's trident has broken off. It's molded in a single piece with his body and is a bit flexible. My attempts to glue it back have been a failure since the material is too flexible for glue to make a good seal. None-the-less, it's still in heavy rotation and I'd certainly buy it again - even with the drawbacks.

Great idea for little fans of the movieJun 07, 2007
By A. Jans My 2 1/2 year old has just gotten into the Little Mermaid and so this is a great toy to help her act out her own little scenes from the movie. The only slight negative is that Sebastian the Crab is very small so right now I think he's somewhere under the couch! Otherwise a great toy.

Great!Mar 03, 2009
By D. Dickason We buy as many of these Disney PVC figurines as they come out with. My 4 year old daughter loves them and so do all her friends. We give them away as individual gifts in birthday party gift-bags, sets as birthday presents, or give them individually as pick-me-ups when kids are sick or crying.
Perfect cake topper and toyOct 12, 2011
By knickknackgirl This was a hit at my daughters 6th birthday. Used it as the cake topper and then the kids played with it afterwards.
Good useAug 07, 2011
By VHyink This was a put to good use for my daughters birthday cake. Some of the paint looked kinda funny but not noticeable if you don't look to closely.
