5I Love Them!Jan 17, 2011
By Samantha
I already have a small aquarium for the triops, thus why I just ordered these packets instead. The price is great considering to get a kit with the aquarium costs $13-$20. However, I did NOT follow the instructions that came inside the packet. I did a lot of research after screwing up the first batch I got in a different set (not this brand). The instructions say to use spring water, I did NOT use spring water because most triops caring guides call for distilled water. They say distilled water will give you best results and I sure got great results for these triops using distilled water that you can buy at any super market. Make sure you keep a light on them like it does mention in the instructions that come in the packet. I kept a light on them for 24 hours a day, I did set them in sunlight whenever it was light to give my lightbulb a break & save some electricity. At night time I would give them some shade by laying a piece of paper over 1/4 of their aquarium so they could move to 1 side or the other depending on their preference.

Anyway, within 24 hours after putting the eggs into the water; I had 2 triops. Within 36 hours; I had 4 triops total. withing 48 hours; I had 7 triops total. So I currently have 7 triops after 48 hours :D

By the way, the only reason why I gave this a 2 star durability rating is because you have to CAREFULLY watch what you put into the tank. Any harmful chemicals can be fatal to your triops. For example, I read online that a guy used red gravel to give his tank a neat look. Well the dye that was used to color the gravel gave off a chemical that contradicted with the triops. They all had molting complications & died from not being able to molt properly. But the eggs on the other hand, as long as they're in that case you can throw that case around all you want & I'm sure you will still have at least 3 triop hatchlings.

NOTE: When your triops hatch, it is VERY VERY hard to see them. Some people will tell you to place a black paper outside of the aquarium to try to see their white bodies contrast against the black background. I still find it difficult to see them using this method. The easiest way to see your triops is to shine a light through the bottom of their aquarium (mine is small). What I did was I set my aquarium on top of a lamp shade so the light could shine through the bottom of the aquarium (only works if your lampshade has a flat, open top) this way, they are much easier to see. They show up as little fluorescent white specs but they swim around. I found that to be the EASIEST way to see them. If you can't do it my method, I'm sure if you shine an LED flashlight through the bottom of the aquarium it will give you similar results.

Here are some great links that I found helped me GREATLY in hatching & growing my triops.

1Package contained no viable eggsAug 10, 2011
By oniscidea
I was very disappointed by this product. It arrived in a timely manner, and contained the expected food packet and egg container. The egg container was expected to contain a mixture of very small triops eggs mixed in with detritus. What is troubling is that the egg container held only the detritus and no eggs.

I am very familiar with the eggs of related branchiopods such as artemia. No eggs of any kind could be found in this package. I set up the hatching container and poured the detritus mixture in anyway. After a week in recommended hatching conditions, no tiny triops naupilae could be found, living or dead. I therefore concluded that this package contained no viable eggs, if it contained any at all. A call to the company requesting warranty clarifications was never returned.

4awesome, if short-lived, petJul 21, 2011

I can't believe these packets are so hard to find - you'd think they would be in the checkout line at Petco, they're so easy and interesting. All you need is a fishbowl, a desk lamp, a fishbowl thermometer, and a jug of filtered water, and boom, you have a couple of weeks worth of entertainment. There are a few days of anticipation ("Mom, when are they gonna hatch?"); then a few exciting days of watching the tiny critters emerge and eat each other; then several more days of watching the sole survivor change and shed his exoskeleton and grow like crazy and swim around like a frenzied eating machine; then another week or so in which he sedately eats his chow and meanders around his bowl. Then there is the burial ceremony. The cycle of life in a nutshell, folks, you've got to love it.

4Great educational toy!May 01, 2011
By northerngal
Though we set up the kit exactly as in the manual, we only hatched one Triop and he lived for about a week. The company is great to deal with and are sending us another kit. We've had Triops before and they grew quite large and we had almost a dozen hatch, so this kit was not a good one. Hopefully the next kit will work. Triops are cute and fun to watch and teach kids responsibility.

4Terrific TriopsSep 21, 2010
By JohnG
After a few attempts at raising Sea Monkeys, my son researched the Triops and wanted to give them a try. The price was affordable and they quickly arrived. He has had a great time watching them grow and interact. I recommend this toy for everyone that isn't ready for a larger pet.
