I rarely review on Amazon, but felt compelled to in this case, because of the many, many, many toys we've accumulated over the years, I would put this puzzle in the top five in terms of how much use it's gotten over the years.
We originally received this puzzle as a gift for my son's second birthday. It was the perfect level of difficulty for a toddler moving from chunky wooden puzzles to a floor puzzle. The pieces are big and very colorful. And at 2, he loved to name each sea creature as he picked it up.
Now my daughter, who is 17 months, plays with it constantly. Every morning for the past three months she leads me to the shelf and takes this down so that we can play together. She's too young to be able to do the puzzle herself, but she likes picks out a sea creature, points to the whole where it goes in the circle, and then has me put the piece lying right above the cutout, so she can pop it in place herself. Her manual dexterity has increased tremendously, and although she can't say the words yet, she really likes pointing to each sea creature and having me name them out loud.
As a matter of fact, I'm on Amazon today to buy this puzzle as a gift for someone else. I would highly recommend this (as I would most Melissa and Doug products)

I've purchased many Melissa and Doug puzzles for my toddler son. While most of their products are solidly made with vibrant colors, perfectly suited for toddlers... this one fails.
All the other Melissa and Doug products I've purchased fit together perfectly, but this one does not. The pieces (i.e. the fishes, crabs, seahorses, and dolphins) are cut from a different set than the base pieces. What ends up happening is that the colors do not align and the pieces have an awkward fit, either falling out too easily or not fitting in at all. It is disappointing since my son loves sea animals and this puzzle, but he gets frustrated trying to put it together. It's hard to explain that he's doing it right, but the pieces just don't fit!!
Pass on this one, and get one of the others (farm friends or zoo friends).

My 3 year old daughter absolutely loves this puzzle. It's colorful and easy enough for her to do by herself.

We love this puzzle! Originally bought for our first child, it's a few years later being used by our second, who's almost three now. She asks to play this puzzle several times a week. I like it because it makes teaching her counting and colors easy and fun. She's somehow struggled with grasping colors, but she seems to be getting it playing with this. The puzzle is very durable and sturdy. While the fishes are all meant to go into a specific spot, we haven't had any issues putting them into any of the alternative places. All crabs fit into the crab spots, all dolphins fit into all dolphin spots, and so on. All said and done, we're very happy we purchased this.
