| | | Description: | | With our Triops kits, prehistoric creatures spring back to life by simply adding water. Each kit comes complete with everything you need to grow these amazing pets. Provided with spring water and light, the Triops will quickly grow to adult size of two or more inches in less than 30 days. The Triassic Triops kit contains a container of eggs, hatching 10 to 20 creatures. Each nearly doubles in size daily, swims upside down, performs acrobatics, and teaches simple science concepts. | | | Features: | |
• Cooler Than Monkeys. Triops: way cooler, bigger and more active than sea monkeys. They're dinosaur shrimp, leftovers from some 200 million years ago.
• Don't eat them; just grow them and enjoy this bizarre & ancient display of nature! You get a kidney-shaped tank 2-3/8" tall x 8-1/2"x 5-3/4", a very informative instruction booklet, and a packet full of triops eggs and food.
• Add the eggs to water and watch them go; they'll hatch in a day and reach 1" to 2" or more in a few weeks. Really easy to do, and really cool too.

WONDERFUL KIT!Jan 23, 2008
By Cool Beans It's actually a very nice kit. It seems that all of the triops hatched (a problem with other kits) and they also lived a pretty long life. It's a great educational toy for kids because it shows the cycle of life. The best part is that you can dry out the sand for a few days, put more water and new triops will hatch! I like this kit in particular because they've thought about all the details, including very well-written instructions. Your kids will definitely enjoy it!
PS. Triops are a great aquarium "starter" to determine if the kids could take care of fish.

I purchased two kits from Cabelas in Texas for my children (ages 6 and 8). We set up the tanks and followed the directions to a "T". We live in Hawaii so getting the temperature of the water to between 72 and 80 degrees was no problem. By the next morning we could see little creatures swimming around. I'm not sure how many eggs were in the container, they were too tiny for me to see. They grew really quickly, doubling their size every two days or so. We started them on Veterans day and at one time we had four in each container. They were easy to feed, using the enclosed food pellets. The last two of them died on December 15th, so they lasted almost for a month. They usually live for only 40 days or so. My children enjoyed watching them swim around and were amazed at how prehistoric they looked. We've ordered another set of only the eggs and food. I've ordered a bunch of these sets for Christmas presents from Amazon since the stores here do not carry them. If your child likes animals, bugs, etc. they'll enjoy watching these guys grow.

tiny triopsApr 14, 2010

If you want small but slightly more visible animals in your home than sea monkeys i.e. brine shrimp, triops are a bit more visible, albeit brutal little cannibals. I bought both kits at the same time and currently have one triumphant triop left who did away with his/her friends. My friends were rolling their eyes when they saw the triops, but their kids were impressed by both. It seems the adults just don't care about animals enough to think that almost microscopic beasts can be cool. Their loss. In short, I think that sea monkeys and triops are worth it to those who love animals or are below the age of 12 (or if you are child who loves animals then it is heaven), with the caveat that you must follow instructions--i.e. type of water, when to feed etc.--scrupulously for them to hatch and live! This is my only triop kit, so I can't compare with others. I bought this as it was an amazon prime item that shipped quickly, and I am happy with it.
Emotionally taxing, unsuccessful, and boringJan 28, 2012
By JayDub The ompany gives you enough eggs for 3 rounds of hatching (they must know something about the success rate). Still, no success. These little critters are very fragile, very difficult to keep alive, and generally an anti-climatic and frustrating "toy" for my 9-year old dinosaur lover. You have to have "just the right" water, of which most regular brands are not. That was why the first round never hatched (I think). They have to stay above 72 degrees all the time or they die (the demise of the second batch), and the third round (with good water and good light / sufficient heat) are still not thriving. I am pretty positive that we'll never see one make it to 8 days old, when they can go into their "real" tank, which has remained empty since Christmas. These critters are SO fragile that you can't even use tap water to WASH the items you'll use with them, even if they are bone dry when you're ready to start. Frustrating, time consuming, and boring. Skip this product for another science kit.
They are very smallJan 26, 2012
By jvermisch The animals or creatures or whatever are microscopic so you don't really learn much when you can't even see what is happening.
